Igreja do Socorro (Santa Maria Maior)

🏘️ Funchal · Santa Maria Maior · Funchal

At the end of Rua de Santa Maria, one of Madeira's historic streets, the Socorro church — Santa Maria Maior — overlooks the sea in the old town. It received part of the heritage of the old São Tiago temple, destroyed by the 1748 earthquake: among those treasures, a Japanese Namban chest, proof that the island lay on the world's trade routes. Baroque architecture; inside, a painting on wood of Our Lady of Perpetual Help and, in the sacristy, a predella of the Apostles. The street's restaurants extend the visit.
