Igreja de São Martinho

🏘️ Funchal · São Martinho · Funchal

Built in the first half of the nineteenth century by Afonso Anes, near the old São Martinho chapel. Inside, the gilded altar and the frescoes telling the life of the patron saint hold the eye, as do Afonso Costa's ceiling paintings. Every year, in the first fortnight of November, the church hosts the feast of Saint Martin, one of the island's best attended; the parish civic centre doubles as a cultural hall.
