Mercado dos Lavradores

🏘️ Funchal · Santa Maria Maior · Funchal

The living museum of the island's flavours: opened on 24 November 1940 to become the city's great supply point, the Lavradores market is part of everyday life for Funchal's people and a must for visitors. Edmundo Tavares's building is typical of Estado Novo architecture; the façade, the main door and the fish hall are decorated with large 1940 tile panels from the Battistini faience factory (Maria de Portugal), painted with regional themes by João Rodrigues. Tropical fruit, flowers, vegetables and fish in a bustling, cheerful atmosphere. Largo dos Lavradores; run by the Funchal City Council (mercados.cm-funchal.pt).
