Igreja Paroquial de Santa Beatriz (Água de Pena)

The parish church of Água de Pena, built in 1745 on the rubble of a sixteenth-century chapel. Baroque in style, it has a longitudinal plan with a single nave, a gabled main front and a bell tower. The substance is inside: the high choir and the pulpit, and two side altarpieces in white and gilded carving from the late Baroque. The historic Fonte do Seixo is the parish's other point of interest — the same parish where the runway of Madeira airport was extended.

  • 🤿 Activity

Parque Desportivo da Água de Pena

A multi-sports complex laid out beneath the platform of Madeira airport, at Água de Pena. It lines up more than a dozen pitches and courts: a sand pitch for beach football and volleyball, areas for hockey, skating, futsal, mini-basketball, volleyball, handball, football, tennis, padel and squash, plus a space for skateboarding and BMX and another for slide and climbing. At the centre, a large amphitheatre hosts shows. The site gives access to a nautical club and has a gym, catering, gardens, toilets, children's areas, fitness circuits and 311 parking spaces.

  • 🏛️ Culture

Igreja do Coração de Jesus (Capela dos Cardais)

Built in 1907 by Canon Henrique Modesto de Bettencourt, in the parish of Água de Pena (Machico). A fire destroyed it in 1976; it was rebuilt in 1987. The architecture is Revivalist and neo-Mannerist, on a longitudinal plan. Inside, the chancel is topped by a rendering of the Agnus Dei; the altarpiece is framed by two corbels carrying sculptures of Our Lady of Fatima and Saint Joseph. It is also called the Cardais chapel.
