Igreja do Colégio (São João Evangelista)

🏘️ Funchal · São Pedro · Funchal

On Praça do Município, the church of São João Evangelista — the Jesuits' "Colégio" — is one of the city's finest 17th-century religious monuments, at the turning point between international Mannerism and Portuguese Baroque. A longitudinal plan and three intercommunicating chapels; its gilded altarpieces rank among the most valuable in the country, the Onze Mil Virgens chapel has a painted ceiling imitating a vault with lunettes and tiled walls, the organ is historic and the paintings date from the 17th and 18th centuries. In the atrium, a windscreen door carved from sugar-box wood, flanked by shell-shaped stoups; on the façade, reliquary busts of St Ignatius of Loyola, St Francis Xavier, St Francis Borgia and St Stanislaus.
