Núcleo Museológico A Cidade do Açúcar

🏘️ Funchal · Sé · Funchal

On Praça de Colombo, the museum opened in 1996 brings back Madeira's golden age of sugar, on the memory of João Esmeraldo's Manueline house — where Christopher Columbus stayed. Flemish sculptures and paintings bought with sugar money, sugar moulds, silverware and objects unearthed from the Esmeraldo house recreate the social life of the 15th and 16th centuries, when "white gold" made the island's fortune.
