Escultura da Irmã Mary Jane Wilson

🏘️ Santa Cruz · Santa Cruz

A sculptural group by the Madeiran Luís Paixão, unveiled in February 2014 in the municipal garden of Santa Cruz. It honours Mary Jane Wilson (1840-1916), who came to Madeira in 1881 as a nurse accompanying an English patient and settled shortly afterwards in Funchal, where she spent the rest of her life. As early as 1884 she founded the Congregation of the Franciscan Sisters of Our Lady of Victories, took the name Sister Mary of St Francis and devoted herself to teaching children and caring for the sick and the poor. Madeirans called her 'Boa Mãe'.
