Moinho de Água de São Jorge

🏘️ Santana · São Jorge · Achadinha

The last working watermill on the island of Madeira, at Achadinha. Its history goes back more than three hundred years; a restoration in 2000 put it back in working order. It turns on the waters of the Levada do Rei, which crosses part of the north coast's forest cover. Local people still mill here the wheat, maize, barley and rye grown on the poios of São Jorge, as was once done all over the island.
