A little history

The municipality was created in 1832 and installed in 1835 with six parishes: Arco de São Jorge, São Jorge, Santana, Faial, São Roque do Faial and Porto da Cruz — the last detached on 15 October 1852 in favour of Machico. The decree of 10 December 1867 abolished it, sending Faial and São Roque do Faial to Machico and Arco de São Jorge and São Jorge to São Vicente; it was restored, and decree no. 40,221 of 5 July 1955 fixed the present boundaries. Luís Augusto Acciaioli, who came from Machico, was its first administrator for 51 years. Santana was raised to city status on 1 January 2001, «the first city of the 21st century».

The places to see6

  • 🌿 Nature

Disjunção Prismática da Foz da Ribeira do Faial

    • 🏅 Regional network of natural monuments

Beside the Foz da Ribeira do Faial bathing complex stands a prismatic, or columnar, disjunction: regular columns born of the slow cooling of a lava flow. The regional forestry institute has classified it a Natural Monument, one of the ten on Madeira island. It is visible from the pebble beach and its natural pool, without leaving the complex.

  • 🌿 Nature

    Caldeirão do Inferno

The far end of PR 9, beyond Caldeirão Verde: 2,200 m more, in a tight cirque carved by the same stream. The official page gives the full path from Queimadas to Caldeirão do Inferno as 8.7 km one way and six and a half hours; so set off early and count on returning the same way. It is the most exposed part of the route.

€4.50 per visitor over 12, SIMplifica booking (PR 9)
  • 🌿 Nature

    Caldeirão Verde

A lake at the foot of a fall of about a hundred metres, formed by the Ribeiro do Caldeirão Verde, in the heart of the Laurissilva. It is reached by PR 9, from the Queimadas Forest Park: 8.7 km one way, about six and a half hours there and back, four tunnels cut in the rock. The levada that leads to it was dug in the eighteenth century to carry water to the farmland of the parish of Faial.

€4.50 per visitor over 12, SIMplifica booking (PR 9). Queimadas parking €2/hour

Viewpoints25

  • 🔭 Viewpoint

    Miradouro do Pico Ruivo

    • 🏅 Island peak

The highest point of the archipelago, 1,862 m, Portugal's third-highest summit, and the island's widest panorama: the Curral das Freiras valley and Câmara de Lobos, the villages of Santana, the Ribeira Grande and Ribeira de São Jorge valleys, Ponta de São Lourenço, Paul da Serra and, with good visibility, Porto Santo and the Desertas. It is reached only on foot, by PR 1 from Pico do Areeiro (one-way from Pedra Rija, €10.50 ticket) or by PR 1.2 from Achada do Teixeira (2.8 km, €4.50) — SIMplifica booking compulsory in both cases. High-altitude heath and monumental rock formations that often pierce the cloud layer; it is also the nesting ground of Zino's petrel. The lookout itself has no fee.

  • 🔭 Viewpoint

    Miradouro do Pico do Areeiro

    • 🏅 Island peak

The island's third-highest peak, at 1,818 m, and the most visited thanks to its road and facilities: from up here, the whole Maciço Montanhoso, Ponta de São Lourenço, Curral das Freiras and, on clear days, Porto Santo, with the Atlantic as a backdrop. The sunrise spectacle, weather permitting, draws ever more onlookers and photographers — the best hour, provided you wrap up. It is the start of the Vereda do Areeiro (PR 1) to Pico das Torres (1,851 m) and Pico Ruivo (1,862 m), fully reopened on 1 May 2026. Access: car park charged at €4.00 per hour; a shuttle is run by Horários do Funchal (timetables on their site). The lookout itself is free.

  • 🌿 Nature

Reserva Natural do Sítio da Rocha do Navio

    • 🏅 Protected area

On Santana's north coast, an exclusively marine reserve born in 1997 of the will of the local people, aware of the degradation of fishing resources by destructive practices: 1,822 ha between Ponta do Clérigo and Ponta de São Jorge, from high tide to the 100 m isobath, with Ilhéu da Rocha das Vinhas and Ilhéu da Viúva (94 m), a Natura 2000 botanical refuge of plants found only in the archipelago. The name recalls the wreck of a Dutch ship in the 19th century. You go down from the viewpoint by a steep path cut in the rock or by cable car; access to the sea is very limited by sea conditions, often rough on this coast. Reception centre and exhibition room; regional forestry institute environmental-education visit programme.

    Penha d'Águia

The "eagle's rock", a rock mass of about 600 m (590 m) that separates the municipalities of Machico and Santana between Porto da Cruz and Faial: one of Madeira's great geological symbols, dominating every landscape of the north-east coast — from the Portela pass, PR 5 Vereda das Funduras, PR 10 Levada do Furado, the Guindaste viewpoint or the Fortim do Faial. No classified trail climbs it: the ascent is not waymarked by the regional forestry institute, so admire it from below.

Roseiral da Quinta do Arco (Arco de São Jorge)

One of Europe's five most famous rose gardens and one of the largest in the world, with more than 1,500 varieties — old and contemporary, climbing or not, the rarest identified by name and class. Created in 2003, opened to the public in April 2004 and dedicated to Isabel de Herédia, Duchess of Braganza, it is listed as a "Garden of Excellence" by the World Federation of Rose Societies. Since 26 June 2017 the garden has been run by an international hotel group within a tourist complex;(April–December, 10:00–18:00). Included here as a garden, not as a business.

    Igreja Matriz de São Jorge

The largest Baroque church in the Autonomous Region of Madeira, built in the seventeenth century in the parish of São Jorge. Its main front faces north and its window arrangement is unusual in the regional typology: the portal is topped by three sill windows and, in the tympanum, by another window flanked by pilasters carrying a straight cornice. The longitudinal plan holds a single nave and a lower, narrower chancel, with a square bell tower. At the head of the nave, the presbytery is marked by a rosewood balustrade curving at the sides; the altarpieces are in Joanine gilded carving, and there are paintings on canvas.

  • 🏛️ Culture

Capela de Nossa Senhora da Penha de França (Faial)

A chapel set into a large rock, at Fazenda, in the parish of Faial. The main front, facing east and pierced by a round-arched door, is plastered masonry painted white, topped by a Latin cross in red Cabo Girão stone and by a bell tower with a gilded bronze bell. The single nave is cut into the rock itself, giving an irregular barrel roof; inside, a small altar in Mannerist stonework and a holy water font. A chapel is mentioned here as early as the sixteenth century, in a former refuge of Canary Island slaves; the official foundation dates from 1685, the year still carved on the arch of the front. The pilgrimage was restored in 1984.

  • 🏛️ Culture

Farol da Ponta de São Jorge

A 14 m lighthouse set at 271 m of altitude on Ponta de São Jorge, in service since April 1959 though designed as early as 1948. The ribbed cylindrical tower is backed by an adjoining building. It first held a large-model third-order drum dioptric lens (500 mm focal length) and a gas filament lamp; connected to the public electricity grid in 1962, it ran on gas and electricity, then received 12 V / 100 W halogen lamps in 1995 giving it a range of 15 miles. It remotely controls the São Lourenço lighthouse, at the island's other end.

  • 🏛️ Culture

    Casas Típicas de Santana (Núcleo)

Santana's ex-libris turned into one of the icons of the whole archipelago: triangular wooden houses — an abundant, cheap material that balances the indoor temperature — topped with a thatched roof, a way of using the straw of cereals (wheat, rye) while the pitch keeps them watertight. Fronts painted blue, red and white; inside, a ground floor split into kitchen and bedroom, and an attic for storing the harvest. The Núcleo de Casas Típicas in the centre of Santana shows a group of them and tells their story; the Núcleo's lookout is one of the 85 official viewpoints.

  • 🏛️ Culture

Museu do Vinho e da Vinha (Arco de São Jorge)

On the north coast, at Sítio da Lagoa in Arco de São Jorge, a living museum of Madeira wine set in the experimental viticulture field: a trial area and an old restored cellar with the winegrowers' tools, mostly donated by the local people, three restored presses, a section on the cycles of the vine and the characteristics of the grape varieties grown in the region, a tasting area for regional products (bolo de mel, cornbread) and a shop. Open weekday afternoons only

  • 🏛️ Culture

    Fortim do Faial

At Faial, on Santana's north coast, an 18th-century battery built to watch for invaders, today a leisure space and lookout: a semicircular plan following the slope, an outer wall, the lower two thirds set forward, an ashlar coping, and ten small English cannons that once defended the spot. A monument of local value since 1996, much visited for its view of Faial, São Roque do Faial, Porto da Cruz, Penha d'Águia and Ponta de São Lourenço. Open daily at the hours shown.

    Santana

    • 🏅 UNESCO Biosphere Reserve (28 October 2020)

Between nature and tradition, the town and municipality of the north coast (about 8,800 inhabitants, 96.2 km², six parishes: Arco de São Jorge, Faial, Ilha, Santana, São Jorge, São Roque do Faial) is known worldwide for its triangular thatched "casinhas", the symbol of an isolation that for a long time was hard to break by land or sea. Listed as a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve in 2011 — 14,889 ha including the marine area, 6,558 inhabitants at the 2021 census — it offers more than 120 km of trails, the Madeira Theme Park, the Rocha do Navio Nature Reserve and Pico Ruivo, the roof of the archipelago; the Queimadas, Pico das Pedras and Ribeiro Frio forest parks lie within it.

  • 📍 Sítio

    Arco de São Jorge

A small seaside village in the municipality of Santana, known for the fertility of its soils thanks to its microclimate, in the amphitheatre overlooked by the Beira da Quinta and Vigia viewpoints. Two visits at Sítio da Lagoa: the Wine and Vine Museum, set in the experimental viticulture field with its three restored presses, and the Quinta do Arco rose garden, opened in 2004, one of the largest in the world with more than 1,500 varieties. At Cabo Aéreo, the cable that once lowered sugar cane to the sea recalls the mills of São Jorge's original settlement, whose ruins can be seen at the Calhau.
