Capela do Senhor dos Milagres (Machico)

On Largo do Senhor dos Milagres, the chapel that keeps the memory of the first Mass celebrated in Madeira, the day after the discovery, in 1419. The present building, vernacular architecture with Baroque features, replaced the chapel of Christ (or of Mercy) destroyed by the 1803 flood; several stones of the original pointed-arch portico survive, the rest being Neo-Manueline replica. Inside, the image of the crucified Christ swept away by the flood and "miraculously" recovered from the sea three days later; every year a procession bringing thousands of pilgrims recalls the event.
