Grutas e Centro do Vulcanismo de São Vicente

🏘️ São Vicente · São Vicente · Passo

A journey to the centre of the Earth: the São Vicente caves were born 890,000 years ago from an eruption on Paul da Serra, when the lava, set at the surface by the cold, kept flowing inside and carved volcanic tubes with the gases released. Known to the locals since 1885, they were among the first volcanic caves opened to the public in Portugal, in 1996; you walk 700 m of galleries among lava stalactites, lakes and tunnels five to six metres high, before the Centro do Vulcanismo, which rounds off the visit in an educational way. The ex-libris of the municipality of São Vicente. Paid entry (fee and hours not found on an official source).
