A little history

The place was first called Ponta do Tristão, then Janela da Clara; it owes its present name to Francisco Moniz, an Algarve nobleman married to Filipa da Câmara, granddaughter of João Gonçalves Zarco. A royal charter of 12 March 1574 already mentions it. Attached to Machico, it passed around 1744 to the new jurisdiction of São Vicente, then became a municipality under Queen Maria II, officially on 31 October 1835. Its administrative history is eventful: abolished in 1849, restored in 1855, abolished again in 1867, restored in 1871 — the year Ponta do Pargo went to Calheta, taking the municipality from five parishes down to four —, abolished once more in 1895 and definitively re-established on 13 February 1898. First administrator: Captain Tomás João Perestrelo da Câmara.

The places to see1

  • 🌿 Nature

    Chão da Ribeira (Seixal)

    • 🏅 Laurissilva, World Heritage (1999)

A green valley above Seixal, one of the five gateways into the Laurissilva. The valley floor is farmed: terraces and tool sheds line the stream bed. A small picnic park has a barbecue, tables and benches; this is where the Festa do Panelo is held in January, when that stew of vegetables and cured meats is cooked and shared. The place also serves as the starting point for walks and for canyoning outings.

Viewpoints7

  • 🔭 Viewpoint

    Miradouro da Ribeira da Janela

At the top of the parish of Ribeira da Janela, at Eira da Achada, this lookout opened in 2009 is one of the best equipped on the island: toilets, children's areas, picnic areas and a car park. The view runs along the north coast to Seixal, São Vicente and Ponta Delgada, with the rocky relief typical of this shore. Below, at the river mouth, the big islets standing in the ocean: one of them is pierced by a window-shaped opening ("janela") that gave its name to the river and the village.

  • 🔭 Viewpoint

    Miradouro da Santinha

On the ER 101 between Porto Moniz and Santa do Porto Moniz, Santinha gives the most complete view of the town: its whole extent, its volcanic natural pools with their peculiar outline seen from above, the winding coast and Ilhéu Mole, a natural monument. Much visited because it is right by the main road. A statue of Nossa Senhora dos Caminhos recalls the place of faith in local life.

    Piscinas Naturais do Porto Moniz

    • 🏅 Blue Flag 2026

Porto Moniz's ex-libris and one of the north coast's great attractions: pools of volcanic origin, formed over millennia by the cooling of lava, into which the sea flows constantly and renews the water — hence its quality. About 3,800 m² of bathing area two metres deep, 3,210 m² of sun deck (7,600 m³ of seawater, average temperature 20–21 °C according to the municipality). Children's pool, playground, changing rooms, bar, first-aid post, car park, access for people with disabilities, lounger and parasol hire. Open all year (summer 9:00–19:00, winter 9:00–17:00); entry €3, reductions as listed. The island's longest bathing season, 15 April to 15 October, with lifeguards. Bathing season 2026: 15 April – 15 October, a supervised beach with lifeguards assured. Blue Flag 2026. In a swell follow the flags: red = no bathing.

  • 🏝️ Bathing spot

    Praia da Laje (Jamaica), Seixal

On the north coast, at Seixal, an unsupervised pebble beach whose palm trees planted along a promenade several hundred metres long earned it the nickname "Jamaica beach". The Poças das Lesmas are right next door. Bathing season 2026: 1 June – 30 September, but lifeguard cover not yet confirmed. In a swell follow the flags: red = no bathing.

  • 🏝️ Bathing spot

Praia do Porto de Abrigo do Seixal

The north coast's postcard: a black-sand beach that formed naturally a few years ago next to the harbour of refuge and the Clube Naval do Seixal, enclosed in an amphitheatre of cliffs and green mountains. Good access, showers, a bar and kayak hire; a spot used all year for bodyboarding, canoeing and stand-up paddling. A good starting point for the Laurissilva trails. Bathing season 2026: 1 June – 30 September, a supervised beach with lifeguards assured. In a swell follow the flags: red = no bathing.

  • 🏝️ Bathing spot

Piscinas do Clube Naval do Seixal

The wide volcanic pools of the Clube Naval do Seixal, free to enter, between the green of the mountains and the blue of the sea: toilets, showers, a bar with terrace, a sun deck with loungers, and kayak and diving-gear hire for exploring the coast up close. Easy access to the sea. Porto Moniz municipality lists opening hours of 10:00–19:00. Bathing season 2026: 1 June – 30 September, but lifeguard cover not yet confirmed. In a swell follow the flags: red = no bathing.

  • 🏝️ Bathing spot

Poças das Lesmas (Piscinas Naturais do Seixal)

Seixal's natural pools, near Praia da Laje: black volcanic rock formations enclosing uniquely shaped basins, where turquoise water contrasts with the dark stone. Since 2024 the site has had a lifeguard, which justifies the entry fee (€2.50); toilets, showers and a bar. Extreme caution: large waves can rise without warning — watch the sea and avoid the most exposed areas. Porto Moniz municipality also stresses caution because of sea conditions. Not an official bathing water in 2026: no lifeguard service is guaranteed; follow the notices on site and the flags.

  • 🏝️ Bathing spot

    Piscinas Naturais do Cachalote (Aquário)

At the entrance to Porto Moniz, near the Madeira Aquarium, the "Cachalote" natural pools — also called the Aquário pools — are the wild, free version of the volcanic basins: an untouched shape into which the pure water of the Atlantic flows naturally. No facilities or toilets, just an outdoor shower; the site is supervised during the bathing season. Next door: the aquarium (more than 90 species of the archipelago) and the Centro de Ciência Viva with its permanent Laurissilva exhibition. Not an official bathing water in 2026: no lifeguard service is guaranteed; follow the notices on site and the flags.

    Fanal

    • 🏅 Laurissilva, World Heritage (1999)

One of the places where the Laurissilva, a World Heritage site since December 1999, is most alive: between Ribeira da Janela and the Paul da Serra plateau, the Fanal forestry post is famous for its centuries-old tils, some of them already standing before the island was discovered, and for the mystical atmosphere of its fogs. A small volcanic crater classified as a Rest and Quiet Reserve by the Parque Natural da Madeira and a Natura 2000 site, it is a place of contemplation as much as a trail junction: PR 13 Vereda do Fanal arrives here from Paul da Serra, PR 14 Levada dos Cedros leaves towards Curral Falso, PR 28 (closed) drops to Rocha Vermelha. On the ER 209; free access, trails charged.

  • 🌿 Nature

Foz da Ribeira da Janela (Monumento Natural)

    • 🏅 Regional network of natural monuments

At the mouth of the Ribeira da Janela, the island's longest watercourse, big rocks stand in the ocean; one of them is pierced by a window-shaped opening ("janela") that gave its name to the river and the village. The "Escoada da Foz da Ribeira da Janela" — the lava flow at the mouth — is among the Region's fifteen Natural Monuments created in 2021, witnesses to the archipelago's volcanic history born of two hotspots. A rocky beach with free access, toilets and showers 9:00–19:00 according to Porto Moniz municipality; seen from the Porto de Abrigo viewpoint and the Ribeira da Janela lookout.

  • 🌿 Nature

    Ilhéu Mole (Monumento Natural)

    • 🏅 Regional network of natural monuments

The islet that closes Porto Moniz's landscape, facing the natural pools: Ilhéu Mole is one of the Region's fifteen Natural Monuments created in 2021, for the archipelago's geodiversity — rocks, volcanic structures and landforms that document its history. It is not visited: you admire it from the seafront, the pools and the lookouts.

  • 🌿 Nature

Queda de Água do Véu da Noiva

    • 🏅 Regional network of natural monuments

The waterfall drops straight towards the sea, on the old road linking São Vicente to Seixal. It is the hanging mouth of Ribeira de João Delgado: the rapid retreat of the coast, by vertical erosion, left the stream bed in mid-air. The regional forestry institute has classified it a Natural Monument — one of the ten on Madeira island. You look at it from the Véu da Noiva viewpoint, on the road above.

Igreja de Santa Maria Madalena (Porto Moniz)

One of the oldest churches in the north of the island, from the seventeenth century, dedicated to Saint Mary Magdalene. The most important building campaign in its history took place in 1798: the present layout comes from it. Inside, the figure of the saint holds the bottles of perfume with which she anointed Christ's feet; she has been held miraculous since the seventeenth century. Old records report that on the feast day buckets were filled from an irrigation well in the belief that the water healed the sick. The image goes out in procession on 22 July.

  • 🏛️ Culture

    Aquário da Madeira

The aquarium of Madeira stands in a rebuilt fort dedicated to São João Baptista: the original was raised in 1730 against the pirate raids on Porto Moniz, and the Câmara bought its ruins in 1998 to restore them from the surviving iconography. It opened on 4 September 2005 and holds more than 90 native species in twelve display tanks, drawn from the waters of the archipelago and, for many of them, of the rest of Macaronesia.

    Porto Moniz

The town of the far north, between the Laurissilva mountains and the northern sea that pounds its cliffs: from the start its people have lived from fishing, still important in the local economy and celebrated every year at the Semana do Mar, the municipality's biggest cultural and sporting event (canoe races, fishing contests, food). Porto Moniz's image is its natural pools cut into volcanic rock, where seawater renews itself constantly — Blue Flag 2026, bathing season from 15 April to 15 October — completed by the free Cachalote pools, the Madeira Aquarium (more than 90 species of the archipelago) and the Centro de Ciência Viva with its Laurissilva exhibition. The Santinha and Pico viewpoints overlook it. Ilhéu Mole, a Natural Monument, closes the picture.

  • 📍 Sítio

    Seixal

The Véu da Noiva waterfall is on the old road to São Vicente. Traditional wine country: Seixal's vines are part of the north coast's terraced landscape.
